Summary
- Falguni Nayar left Kotak Mahindra in 2012, aged 49, and started Nykaa without retail, beauty or technology experience.
- Nykaa listed in November 2021 and reported ₹10,022 crore in FY26 revenue (about US$1.05 billion) and ₹203.94 crore net profit.
- Sources disagree on her seed money and net worth, so every figure here carries its source and date.
In 2012, a senior Kotak Mahindra banker left a career built on taking other people’s companies public. The business she chose was beauty e-commerce, a category many investors told her Indian shoppers would not buy online. Fourteen years on, the Falguni Nayar story has an answer: Nykaa reported ₹10,022 crore (about US$1.05 billion) in revenue for FY26.
US dollar figures in this article use ₹95.5 to the dollar, the PTI interbank close on 25 August 2026, unless a source’s own conversion is named.

A banker who had already taken DLF public
Falguni Nayar was born in Mumbai in 1963 into a Gujarati family. Her father ran a small bearings business. She studied commerce at Sydenham College and then joined the 1983 to 1985 postgraduate programme at IIM Ahmedabad.
Her first job was consulting at A.F. Ferguson. In 1993 she moved to Kotak Mahindra, where she set up the group’s international operations in London and New York, then ran its institutional equities business and later its investment bank as managing director. Fortune lists DLF, Tech Mahindra and IDFC among the companies she took public.
That résumé shapes the rest of the story. Working on those listings taught her, she says, to explain a business model plainly, to be transparent in reporting and to avoid leaning on any single stakeholder. Fortune’s 2022 interview also notes that her husband, Sanjay Nayar, chairs KKR India.
The bet people told her to skip
By 2012 Nayar had spent years watching founders pitch. Beauty was the category she picked, and she was told more than once to pick something else. If she wanted e-commerce, people said, she should sell electronics or fashion. Investors she approached doubted that Indians would buy cosmetics online, EY’s profile of her says.
Her reasoning was about shelves. India had no department-store culture, and beauty is a long-tail business: shoppers want choice, so a retailer has to stock thousands of products. That is hard to do in physical stores across a country this large. Online, Nayar says, Nykaa could keep its stock in one or two warehouses and serve everyone from there. The Indian beauty shopper of that period, she adds, used about five products, kajal and lipstick among them.
She turned 49 in February 2012 and launched Nykaa in April. That is the age Fortune reports. Bloomberg says she was months from turning 50, and some profiles round up to 50. Her listed birth date, 19 February 1963, supports 49.
According to her Dabur board profile, nykaa.com was live by December 2012. EY’s profile says she ran operations herself with hardly any staff, often working until 3 a.m. The name comes from a Sanskrit word that Bloomberg glosses as heroine and Fortune as actress.
“I didn’t know beauty, I didn’t know retail.”

She says she made up for it by learning fast. Her advice to young founders is to be a generalist who can pick up anything rather than a specialist who boxes themselves in.

How much did Falguni Nayar put in to start Nykaa?
The honest answer is that sources disagree. Forbes says she invested $2 million of her own savings. Tatler Asia reports that Nayar and her husband funded Nykaa alone in its early years. 5paisa puts the seed at ₹20 crore from family and friends, and News24 cites ₹18 crore. None of the sources explains whether those figures cover the same period or the same pool of money.
What is on record is the total Nykaa raised from outside investors before it listed: ₹577.74 crore (about US$77 million at the time), according to Fortune. Nayar told Fortune that people dismissed the business because she wasn’t raising billions from global investors, and that she stuck to what made business sense at each step. She also says women hesitate to bet family capital on a business, and that she decided to do it anyway.

Inventory, education and the first outside money
Nykaa chose to buy and hold its own beauty stock. Inc42 notes that Nykaa was never really a marketplace in beauty. The reason was trust. India Retailing reports that research firms such as Ventura, Motilal Oswal and ICICI liked the inventory model because it assured shoppers that products were genuine.
Education did the rest. Nayar says Nykaa used blogs, social media and community platforms to teach shoppers what a primer or an eye cream was before asking them to buy one. In a second phase it went after international labels, winning Korean brands such as The Face Shop and later Huda Beauty and Charlotte Tilbury. By 2015, she says, broadband had become cheap and Nykaa was ahead of a category others had ignored. That year it opened its first physical store in Mumbai and began selling its own in-house products.
Outside money came in measured steps. Lighthouse India Fund III bought out an earlier investor for ₹113 crore (US$15.3 million, as reported then) in September 2018. TPG Growth put in ₹100 crore in 2019 at a reported valuation of about US$724 million. Steadview Capital followed in 2020 at a reported valuation above US$1.2 billion, and Fidelity bought in through a secondary deal in November 2020. Katrina Kaif and Alia Bhatt also invested.

How Nykaa makes its money today
Beauty is the engine. In the October to December 2025 quarter, beauty brought in ₹2,622 crore (about US$275 million) of Nykaa’s ₹2,873 crore revenue from operations, around 91%, while fashion added ₹235 crore, according to Exchange4media and Entrackr. Nayar told Fortune that India’s fashion industry is about five times the size of beauty and that she expects fashion to grow fast over five years. PTI reported that narrowing fashion losses helped lift profit in the March 2026 quarter.
A third leg is owned brands. Inc42’s list of the House of Nykaa portfolio includes Nykaa Cosmetics, Kay Beauty, Dot & Key and Earth Rhythm. The same analysis is blunt about the cost of holding inventory: most of the gross margin an inventory-led retailer earns is spent rather than kept, and the model only works if the businesses that spending builds eventually earn more than they cost to run.
Rivals aren’t standing still. Inc42 names Reliance Retail’s Tira as a premium-focused challenger, and notes that Purplle, founded in 2012 like Nykaa, has gone after shoppers who find Nykaa and Tira too upmarket.
Listing day, 10 November 2021
Nykaa’s IPO raised ₹5,352 crore (about US$560 million at ₹95.5; coverage in 2021 put it near US$720 million at the exchange rate of the time). The issue opened on 28 October 2021, closed on 1 November and was subscribed 81.78 times, Business Standard reported. Shares listed on 10 November and rose as much as 89% on debut, per Bloomberg. AFP reported that the company’s valuation touched about ₹1 trillion (US$13.5 billion at the time) within five minutes of trading.
Bloomberg put Nayar’s wealth at about US$6.5 billion that day, an estimate StartupIndiaX has not verified, and called her India’s richest self-made woman. YourStory later reported promoter holding of 52.56% as of December 2021, including 22.06% held through Nayar’s family trust.
“Indian-born, Indian-owned and Indian-managed dream-come-true.”
Falguni Nayar at the listing ceremony, AFP, 10 November 2021
AFP noted that, unlike many loss-making peers, Nykaa was profitable at listing. Fortune counts Paytm and Zomato among the year’s other big Indian listings. Her children now run large parts of the company: Adwaita Nayar leads House of Nykaa and Nykaa Fashion, and Anchit Nayar leads Nykaa Beauty.

Thirty-three years in ten dates
Two dates anchor the whole story: 1993, when she joined Kotak, and 2012, when she left to start Nykaa. Everything before 2012 is preparation. Everything after is the build.
The numbers since the bell
FY26, the year to 31 March 2026, is when profit caught up with scale. Revenue from operations rose 26% to ₹10,022.35 crore (about US$1.05 billion). Net profit was ₹203.94 crore (about US$21.4 million), up 182% from ₹72.07 crore a year earlier, Inc42 reported.
The quarterly series shows how. Revenue climbed from ₹2,155 crore in the June 2025 quarter to ₹2,873 crore in the festive December quarter, dipped to ₹2,648 crore in March and reached ₹2,782 crore in June 2026. Quarterly profit rose from ₹24.47 crore to ₹79.76 crore over the same stretch.
Nayar said the December 2025 quarter was a record for GMV and EBITDA margin, Storyboard18 reported. On 4 October 2026 Nykaa told exchanges that September-quarter GMV growth should land in the high twenties and net revenue growth in the late twenties, with 14 net new stores taking the total to 338 as of 30 September 2026. Those figures are provisional.
On 24 September 2026 Nykaa completed the purchase of 51% of Aminu Wellness for up to ₹32 crore (about US$3.4 million).
Tickertape put Nykaa’s market capitalisation at about ₹98,832 crore (US$10.3 billion) on 22 October 2026. In rupee terms that is close to the ₹1 trillion valuation reported on listing day. The dollar figure is lower because ₹1 trillion equalled US$13.5 billion in 2021, roughly ₹74 to the dollar, against ₹95.5 now. That comparison is StartupIndiaX’s own arithmetic, not a reported figure.
Net worth: why the estimates don’t match
Nayar’s wealth is the most-searched part of her story and the least settled. Bloomberg estimated about US$6.5 billion on listing day in November 2021. Forbes India’s 2022 rich list had her debut at US$4.08 billion, according to Global Indian. For the October 2024 list, two published summaries give different figures: US$4.2 billion (rank 71) in one and US$3.64 billion (rank 89) in the other. In July 2026, News24 cited Forbes at ₹39,555 crore, about US$4.1 billion at ₹95.5.
These are estimates, and StartupIndiaX has not verified any of them. Forbes lists her with her family, so a figure may reflect combined holdings, and the share price moves every day.
The questions that followed the listing
Listing didn’t end the scrutiny. In November 2022, as lock-in periods for pre-IPO investors were ending, Nykaa issued bonus shares at a 5:1 ratio. Inc42 reported that the timing raised questions on corporate governance. In the same week CFO Arvind Agarwal resigned. Nykaa said he was leaving to pursue opportunities in the digital economy and start-up space, and Nayar credited him for his role in Nykaa’s emergence as a listed and profitable start-up.
Inc42 reported in early 2023 that five more senior executives had left. Nykaa described those exits as mid-level changes within its normal appraisal and transition process. We did not find a published regulatory outcome on the bonus issue in the sources reviewed, so this section reports only what the company and the press said at the time.
What founders can take from the Falguni Nayar story
Five habits stand out, each tied to a moment above.
- Bring the skills from your last job, even if the industry is new. Nayar says her confidence came from years in regulated businesses like banking and broking, where she learned there are no shortcuts.
- Pick the category people tell you to skip, then teach it. Beauty was the unfashionable choice in 2012, and Nykaa’s blogs and social content taught shoppers what products were before it sold them.
- Own the stock when trust is the product. The inventory model gave Nykaa’s authenticity pitch substance. The cost, as Inc42 points out, is margin that gets spent rather than kept.
- Raise enough, not the most. Nykaa raised ₹577.74 crore before listing and was profitable at its IPO, per AFP.
- Add channels after the core earns. Stores came in 2015, fashion later, and the store count reached 338 by September 2026 once beauty was paying its way.
The next test: Nykaa’s September-quarter results
Nykaa’s next scheduled event is its Q2 FY27 results. This is a developing story: as of 24 October 2026, StartupIndiaX had not found an exchange notice fixing the date, and last year’s September-quarter results came on 7 November. We’ll update this profile when the numbers land.
For founders, the lesson isn’t that late starts are easy. It’s that a clear read of one under-served category can carry a company a long way. If you’ve built in a category people doubted, tell us how it went in the comments, and share this profile with someone planning a late-career start.
