SUMMARY
- Birlasoft is now an OpenAI Select Partner, but the status is a go-to-market door, not a disclosed revenue stream.
- Q2 FY27 revenue grew 6.6% YoY to Rs 1,416.2 crore, yet EBITDA margin slipped 95 basis points to 15.2%.
- Watch five things: deal conversion, new-deal wins, margins, vertical recovery and how well Birlasoft stands out against bigger OpenAI partners like TCS and HCLTech.
On October 8, 2026, Birlasoft announced that it had been named an OpenAI Select Partner within the OpenAI Partner Network. Three weeks later, the stock surged more than 11% after its Q2 FY27 results.
It’s tempting to link the two. Don’t. The rally followed the earnings, and the partnership is a slower story that won’t show up in a single quarter.
So the useful question isn’t whether this is good news. It is. The question is what has to go right for it to show up in Birlasoft’s numbers.
What Birlasoft actually got on October 8
The OpenAI Partner Network is a global program for partners to build, sell and deliver AI solutions with OpenAI. Birlasoft says it plans to expand its OpenAI-related offerings, invest in talent, develop new solutions and scale customer deployments. Early coverage pointed to manufacturing, life sciences, energy and utilities as target industries. You can read the company’s exchange filing yourself.
What you won’t find is a deal value, a revenue target or an exclusivity clause. This is a partner tier, not an investment. Think of it as a better seat at the table, not a guaranteed order.
It’s also not Birlasoft’s first big-model tie-up. In 2023, it built a collaboration around Microsoft’s Azure OpenAI Service. That Centre of Excellence aimed to train 500 consultants and build over 50 use cases. The new status adds a direct relationship with OpenAI itself. That’s our reading, and the announcement doesn’t spell it out.

The numbers before the AI pays off
Q2 FY27 revenue rose 6.6% year on year to Rs 1,416.2 crore, and profit after tax climbed 37.5% to Rs 159.6 crore. Revenue grew 2.7% sequentially.
The soft spots are easy to find. EBITDA margin was 15.2%, down 95 basis points year on year. Deal signings of $116 million were up 8% year on year but down 31.4% from the previous quarter.
In January, the CEO had said FY27 would be a growth year, with sustained quarter-on-quarter growth starting in Q2. Q2 delivered that, modestly. Now the AI story has to carry it further. The full Q2 investor presentation is on the NSE site.
1. Can AI deals turn into billed revenue?
Signed contract value isn’t revenue. After Q1, brokerage research recorded management’s explanation for the gap: pricing pressure, plus AI-driven productivity gains being built into both new and renewal deals. In plain terms, when AI lets Birlasoft do the same work with fewer people, clients expect a lower price.
That’s the paradox for every Indian IT firm selling AI. The better the tools, the less you bill per project. ICICI Securities noted after Q2 that AI-led engagements could be a growth lever, but the wins haven’t yet produced a sustained improvement in revenue.
2. Can it win new work, not just renewals?
Of Q2’s $116 million in deals, $47 million, about 41%, was new business. For the first half, deal wins rose 15% year on year to $285 million. A new multi-year AI engagement with a global logistics company shows the pitch is landing.
Nuvama’s view after the results was that sustained growth depends on stronger signings and converting AI-led opportunities. The partner badge helps most here, as a credibility signal when a client is choosing a vendor. An IDBI Capital note from May listed sales team expansion of about 40% by mid-FY27 among the growth focus areas. The engine is being built. It’s still warming up.
3. Can it hold margins while it invests?
Training people on OpenAI tools, building offerings and hiring sellers all cost money before they earn any. Management has spoken of a sustainable EBITDA margin above 15%. Q2 came in at 15.2%, so there’s almost no cushion.
If pricing pressure and investment rise together, margins are where it will show first.
4. Will manufacturing and life sciences recover?
These are among the industries OpenAI-based work is meant to target, and also the ones analysts had flagged as weak. A BOB Capital note from late 2025 expected headwinds in manufacturing and life sciences to continue, with recovery only from Q1 or Q2 of FY27.
In Q2, the CEO credited growth across key accounts, manufacturing, BFSI and LSS, along with digital and data and ERP services. If those verticals keep recovering, OpenAI-based solutions give Birlasoft something fresh to sell into accounts it already knows. If they don’t, the badge has fewer places to work.
5. How does it stand out from bigger OpenAI partners?
HCLTech signed a multi-year strategic collaboration with OpenAI in June 2025, making it one of the first global IT services firms to do so. TCS followed on February 19, 2026, with a partnership covering AI infrastructure, enterprise rollout and skilling. Birlasoft is walking into a room where larger rivals already sit.
A partnership also doesn’t guarantee growth. HCLTech’s Q1 FY26 showed the limits: revenue rose 3.7% while profit fell 9.7%, around the time of its OpenAI deal.
There’s platform risk too. In June 2026, US curbs on Anthropic models raised fresh questions about how much Indian firms should depend on foreign AI platforms. A mid-sized firm needs to be good at more than one model.

What founders should take from this
If you build AI for enterprises, you’re chasing the same budgets as the IT firms. Inc42 reported that AI startup funding in India rose 265% year on year to $438 Mn in the September quarter. Startups like Healthify have built OpenAI’s models directly into their products.
Birlasoft brings scale, delivery teams and existing client relationships. You bring speed and focus. Expect more partnerships between the two, not just competition.
Our read
This is a smart, necessary move, and a small one.
Necessary because HCLTech and TCS already have their OpenAI ties, so staying out would have been a gap. Small because nothing in the announcement changes the economics on its own.
The signal to watch is the next two quarterly results. If new-deal value rises and margins stay above 15%, the story holds. If deal value keeps sliding and margins slip, the badge will look like decoration.
Three things to take away:
- The Select Partner status gives Birlasoft credibility and access, but no disclosed deal value, so growth still depends on execution.
- Deal conversion and margins, not the badge, will show whether AI work lifts revenue beyond Q2’s 6.6% year-on-year growth.
- Against HCLTech and TCS, Birlasoft has less scale, so focused verticals and new-deal wins matter even more.

FAQs
What is the Birlasoft OpenAI partnership?
Birlasoft was named an OpenAI Select Partner on October 8, 2026. The network lets partners build, sell and deliver AI solutions with OpenAI. It’s a partner designation, not a disclosed investment.
Is this an investment or an exclusive deal?
Nothing in the announcement or the coverage points to an investment, a deal value or exclusivity. It’s a partner-network tier, so any revenue depends on Birlasoft winning and delivering client projects.
How did Birlasoft perform in Q2 FY27?
Revenue rose 6.6% year on year to Rs 1,416.2 crore, and profit after tax rose 37.5% to Rs 159.6 crore. EBITDA margin was 15.2%, down 95 basis points year on year.
Why did Birlasoft’s stock jump after October 28?
The stock surged about 11% to Rs 340.45 after the Q2 results. Reports tied the move to earnings, so the partnership shouldn’t be treated as the direct cause.
How is Birlasoft’s move different from TCS and HCLTech?
HCLTech signed with OpenAI in June 2025. TCS’s February 2026 deal also covers AI infrastructure. Birlasoft’s announcement is a partner-network designation focused on services and deployments.
