Anthropic Will Pay Up to $167,000 for a Four-Month Anthropic Fellowship. Here’s How to Apply

Two new four-month fellowships are open to scientists, philosophers, economists and lawyers. Here’s who qualifies, how to apply, and why applicants in India hit a work-authorization wall.

Anthropic fellowship 2027 pays up to $167,000 for four months

SUMMARY

  • Anthropic’s STEM and Conceptual Reasoning Fellowships run January 12 to May 8, 2027, with applications closing October 28 and offers planned by November 20.
  • Reported pay is $100,000 to $167,000 for the four months, but applicants need existing US work authorization, and the postings say visas aren’t sponsored.
  • Apply through Anthropic’s Greenhouse job pages, expect a take-home exercise, and be ready to show hands-on Claude and Claude Code experience.

Anthropic wants experts who can tell when Claude gets a hard question wrong, and it’s willing to pay for that judgment. Applications for two new Anthropic fellowships close on October 28, 2026.

The company announced the programmes on October 15: one for STEM researchers and one for people in philosophy, cognitive science, economics, policy and law. Both run full-time for four months, from January 12 to May 8, 2027. BusinessToday and other outlets put the pay at $100,000 to $167,000 for the stint.

One condition decides who can apply. Fellows need existing authorization to work in the United States. If you’re in India without it, this one isn’t open to you as things stand.

Two tracks, two kinds of expert

The STEM Fellow track is for scientists and engineers. Anthropic’s posting asks for a PhD in a STEM field and several years of experience, such as a postdoc or faculty role. Prior machine learning experience helps, but the company says scientific judgment and a willingness to learn fast matter more.

This isn’t a first-time experiment. According to the posting, a first cohort of more than 20 STEM fellows across mathematics, physics, life sciences and engineering ran from June to September 2026. The problems they built now feed Claude’s training and one of Anthropic’s internal science evaluations.

The Conceptual Reasoning Fellow track targets questions with no single checkable answer. You need to hold or be completing a PhD in one of those fields, or have equivalent research experience. Experience designing evaluations, benchmarks, datasets or expert rubrics is a plus.

Both tracks share a requirement that’s easy to miss. You need hands-on experience using Claude and Claude Code in your daily work.

Why a lab pays philosophers

Anthropic says the STEM programme is part of its push toward an AI scientist, a system with the long-horizon reasoning and experimental judgment that frontier research needs. Fellows work out where models fall short and build the tasks that expose it.

On X, one reader joked that Claude’s new favourite answer would be “it depends.” The joke lands because questions in law, policy and philosophy rarely have one right answer, and that’s the gap these fellows are meant to close.

Applicants are already pitching ideas in public. One Conceptual Reasoning applicant posted a benchmark concept built around cases where the expert move is to ask a question or challenge a faulty premise instead of answering.

How to apply before October 28

Applications go through Anthropic’s Greenhouse job pages, one for each track.

  1. Pick your track and open the Conceptual Reasoning or STEM posting.
  2. Check your US work authorization first. It’s a minimum qualification, not a nice-to-have.
  3. Gather proof of daily Claude and Claude Code use, plus any evaluation or rubric work if you’re going for the conceptual track.
  4. Submit by October 28. Later stages typically include a take-home exercise and conversations with the research team and potential mentors.
  5. Watch for offers, which Anthropic plans to make by November 20.
Timeline of Anthropic fellowship dates from the October 28, 2026 deadline to the May 8, 2027 end

Logistics matter too. San Francisco is the default location, and remote work within the US may be considered in certain circumstances. Every fellow attends a one-week in-person orientation there. The conceptual posting also notes that fellows are engaged through an employer of record rather than hired directly by Anthropic.

One more thing. Anthropic says its recruiters only write from @anthropic.com addresses and never ask for money or banking details before your first day.

What it means for Indian professionals and founders

The postings say Anthropic isn’t currently able to sponsor visas for fellows, so you’ll need to have or independently obtain US work authorization. That puts the programme out of reach for anyone in India who doesn’t already have it.

There are closer options. The IndiaAI Mission runs a fellowship for students working on AI projects. Anthropic itself has a Startup Partnerships lead role listed in Bangalore, aimed at driving Claude adoption among Indian startups, according to a job listing posted on June 30.

Here’s our read for founders. The scarce resource in AI right now isn’t only engineers. It’s people who can judge whether an answer is right in law, medicine, finance or science. If you’re building an AI product in one of those areas, your domain experts and the rubrics they write may be worth more than you think.

Before the window shuts

  • Confirm your US work authorization today. Without it, the application stops there.
  • Pick the track that matches your PhD or research background, then apply on Greenhouse before October 28.
  • Can’t apply yourself? Send this to someone in the US who can, and mark November 20 for offers.
