Primetrace Founder Story: From a Facebook Ad Test to a Reported ₹200 Crore EBITDA Run Rate

Four ex-Pratilipi colleagues asked users what app to build, then spent six years turning the answer into a portfolio of consumer apps.

Summary

  • Primetrace’s founders tested ideas with Facebook lead ads and daily user calls before building Kutumb, a community app, in 2020.
  • Filed FY25 revenue was ₹128.6 crore with a ₹12 crore net profit. The company claims a ₹200 crore EBITDA run rate as of February 2026.
  • A $50 million round at about $500 million valuation was reported in July 2026. StartupIndiaX found no confirmation as of 28 October 2026.

Before Abhishek Kejriwal and his three co-founders wrote a line of Kutumb’s code, they ran a Facebook ad for an app that did not exist. The ad asked one open question: what app do you need? About 30% of the replies asked for a community app, Kejriwal told Blume’s Sajith Pai in 2023.

That answer is where this Primetrace founder story begins. Six years on, the Bengaluru company behind Kutumb, Crafto AI, Tarot AI, Polo and Sundar AI says it has reached a ₹200 crore ($21 million) EBITDA run rate as of February 2026. That figure is the company’s own claim. The filed accounts tell a more careful story.

USD figures in this article use about ₹96 to the dollar (mid-market, July 2026) for scale, unless a source gave its own conversion.

In this story (about 10 minutes)

Four Pratilipi colleagues and a hackathon idea that lost

Kejriwal was leading product at Pratilipi, a reading and writing platform in Indian languages, when the company ran a hackathon around 2019 and 2020. The brief was to build for the next billion internet users arriving on cheap mobile data. Kutumb was not the idea the team picked, he recalled in the Blume interview. The theme stuck anyway.

He brought a track record. Kejriwal is an IIT Bombay graduate (class of 2013) who started his entrepreneurial journey with Zyloon in 2015, according to Tracxn, and later worked in product at Gojek in Indonesia, per his Wellfound profile. His co-founders came from the same office: Vipul Allawadhi, a product manager and IIT Kharagpur alumnus, Naveen Dewangan, an Android engineer, and Mohit Sharma, an engineer. Those roles come from self-reported Wellfound profiles and the company’s announcement.

Primetrace was the second company to come out of Pratilipi after Animall, Pai observed during the interview. Tracxn lists both Pratilipi and Animall among Kejriwal’s angel investments.

An ad for an app that did not exist

Instead of building, the team ran mock ads for product ideas and collected leads through Facebook lead forms. Kejriwal said the founders made at least 100 calls a day between them, when only three people were on the team.

Specific ideas did not win much conviction. So they ran a generic ad that simply asked people which app they wanted. About 30% of the responses asked for an app for their own community, he said. The first reaction was doubt, since WhatsApp, Facebook Groups and Telegram already existed.

The calls changed their minds. The president of the Rajasthan Nursing Union, a body Kejriwal said has about 16,000 nurses, explained the gap. Chat groups buried members in notifications, broadcast groups had no community, and Facebook Groups gave him no control over what members saw. He also wanted to collect donations in the same place.

Two needs stood out: communication and fund management. Those became version one of Kutumb, launched with two community organisations and roughly 10,000 members, Kejriwal said. Employee associations of nurses, doctors, teachers and farmers turned out to be the biggest group, which the team had not expected.

Reports differ on the start date. Kejriwal said work began in April 2020, while YourStory dated the launch to May 2020.

ID cards, reputation points and a five-person team

How did the founders test whether people cared? By calling users on day 7, 14 and 30 and asking what would change if the app vanished tomorrow. Some members said they would pay to keep it running, Kejriwal said. One association admin told him he had raised more contributions on Kutumb in months than in the previous 12 years. These are the founder’s recollections, not independently checked.

Growth came from a loop, not ads. One admin had about 12,000 members offline but only 1,200 on the app. The team built digital ID cards and reputation points for referrals, with a certificate from the association’s president for the top referrer. That group grew to roughly 5,000 to 6,000 members, and four more admins asked for the same set-up, Kejriwal said.

One loop failed. Asking association presidents to refer other presidents did not work, and Kejriwal said the ₹1,000 to ₹3,000 the team could have offered would not have motivated them.

The team stayed at five people, four founders and one product manager, until the app passed one million users, with no marketing spend, he said. Surge, Sequoia India’s accelerator, came in at around 100,000 monthly users, and Tiger Global followed after 2.2 million. He said a pre-seed round in August 2020 was led mainly by Better Capital with angel investors.

Seed figures differ by source. YourStory reported $300,000 from angels in 2020. Venture Intelligence’s deal database lists ₹19 crore (about $2.6 million, the source’s conversion) between October and December 2020.

The $26 million round that put Kutumb on the map

In June 2021, Tiger Global led a Series A of about $26 million. Venture Intelligence recorded ₹192 crore (about $26.4 million) for a 14.60% stake, with ₹134.65 crore ($18.5 million) from Tiger. Quiet Capital put in about $3.08 million and rocketship.vc about $1.03 million. Kutumb was part of Surge’s fourth cohort.

Entrackr estimated the post-money valuation at $167 million to $170 million and called it one of the five largest Series A rounds by an Indian startup up to that point. Other reports put it nearer $150 million. The company now says it has raised $30 million in total, while Entrackr counted about $28.5 million.

After the deal, venture investors held 30.43% on a fully diluted basis. Sequoia India held 15.94% and Tiger Global 10.25%, ahead of Whiteboard Capital at 1.96%, Quiet Capital at 1.71% and rocketship.vc at 0.57%.

When ads could not pay the bills

By May 2023, Kutumb had about 10 million monthly users, 3 million daily users and around 100,000 associations, Kejriwal said, with a team of 60 to 65 people. Revenue was still early. Day-30 retention, the share of users still active a month after joining, had risen from 8% to 17-20%. Day-90 retention flattened at 10-11%, he said.

Ads were the obvious model, and he did the arithmetic aloud. At India’s ad rates, he said, Kutumb would need 300 to 350 million monthly users to earn $100 million to $150 million from ads alone.

So the team asked users what they would pay for. Matrimony came up. Members said sites such as Shaadi.com and Jeevansaathi showed too few matches in their area, and Kejriwal saw smaller towns as thin on supply for those platforms. He called the matrimony experiment promising but early.

The business that followed looks different. Entrackr, reading the FY25 filings, said revenue came from app subscriptions plus advertising, and that growth was driven by Crafto, an app for personalised quotes and wishes in regional languages shared on WhatsApp. Moneycontrol reported in July 2026 that users pay to add their own photos and greetings to good morning messages. The company describes its approach as building AI-native apps around everyday needs, proving retention first and then scaling distribution through subscriptions.

The portfolio now includes Kutumb, Crafto AI, Tarot AI, Sundar AI for image enhancement, and Polo, a dating and community app for gay users. The company’s pages claim more than 100 million downloads for Kutumb and more than 200 million for Crafto. StartupIndiaX could not confirm those counts independently.

What the filings show, and what the company says

Filed numbers first. Entrackr, reading FY25 accounts filed with the Registrar of Companies, reported operating revenue of ₹128.6 crore ($13.4 million), up 173% from ₹47.2 crore ($4.9 million) in FY24. Net profit was ₹12 crore ($1.3 million), against a ₹3 crore loss a year earlier.

The detail matters. Advertising and promotion cost ₹84.6 crore ($8.8 million), over 62% of total costs. Total expenses reached ₹135.8 crore ($14.1 million), above operating revenue, and EBITDA margin was -5.54%. The profit came after ₹18 crore ($1.9 million) of non-operating income such as interest. Cash and bank balances stood at ₹10.5 crore ($1.1 million) as of March 2025. Entrackr said the numbers qualified Kutumb as an Indicorn, Titan Capital’s label for profitable startups with more than ₹100 crore in annual revenue.

The company’s March 2026 announcement describes a bigger business: ₹550 crore ($57 million) in annual revenue run rate and a ₹200 crore ($21 million) EBITDA run rate as of February 2026, 50x revenue growth in three years and 350 million cumulative downloads. These are company claims, and StartupIndiaX has not independently verified them.

“India’s consumer AI opportunity is massive and largely uncaptured.”

Abhishek Kejriwal, Founder and CEO, in the company’s March 2026 announcement

A run rate annualises a recent period, so it is not like for like with a full-year result. Editorial analysis: if both figures hold, ₹200 crore on ₹550 crore implies a margin near 36%, a sharp move from FY25’s -5.54% in about a year. The FY26 filings will show how much of that holds.

Moneycontrol, citing sources, reported in July 2026 that Primetrace’s run rate was above ₹600 crore ($63 million) with annual profit of ₹120 crore to ₹150 crore ($13 million to $16 million), and that it was in talks to raise about $50 million at roughly $500 million with 360 One Asset participating. This is a developing story. Neither company had responded to Moneycontrol at the time, and StartupIndiaX found no confirmation of a close as of 28 October 2026.

User numbers need care too. Company pages cite 300 million users, the March release cites 350 million cumulative downloads, and the products page cites more than 500 million active users. Downloads are not users, and the three figures do not line up.

Where Primetrace sits among Bharat’s consumer apps

In 2021, Entrackr described Public, a hyperlocal video platform that had raised $41 million led by A91 Partners, as indirect competition for Kutumb’s community core. Since then the company has moved toward subscription apps in greetings, tarot, dating and image tools, where a different set of rivals applies. The sources reviewed do not name them.

Kejriwal’s own benchmark in 2023 was matrimony. He argued that online matrimony companies were thin below the biggest cities, a gap he put at $150 million to $200 million of unserved demand.

The company calls itself India’s number one consumer AI startup. StartupIndiaX could not find an independent ranking that supports the claim.

Net worth and valuation: what can and cannot be said

No credible source gives a net worth figure for Kejriwal. Searches mostly surface pages about the politician Arvind Kejriwal and automated estimate pages with ranges too wide to use, so StartupIndiaX is not publishing a number.

Company valuation is a separate matter, and it is documented only in part. Entrackr estimated about $167 million to $170 million after the 2021 Series A. Moneycontrol reported talks at roughly $500 million in July 2026, not confirmed as completed. The founders’ stakes are not disclosed in the sources reviewed.

How Kejriwal learns, and what he says about founding teams

In the 2023 interview, Kejriwal said he learns mainly from YouTube podcasts, a curated Twitter feed and peer-to-peer meetings with other founders. He named the Lex Fridman and Andrew Huberman podcasts and The Barbershop with Shantanu Deshpande.

On founding teams, he argued that compatibility matters more than complementary skills. Missing skills can be hired, he said, but friction between founders shapes the culture. Tracxn lists seven angel investments by Kejriwal in India, including Pratilipi and Animall.

What other founders can take from the Primetrace playbook

1. Ask an open question before you build. The generic ad outperformed the specific ideas because it let users name their own problem. About 30% named the same thing.

2. Test for loss, not for liking. The day 7, 14 and 30 calls asked what would change if the app disappeared. Members offering to pay to keep it running was the signal Kejriwal trusted.

3. Pay in status when cash does not move people. ID cards and reputation points drove referrals. Kejriwal said small cash rewards would not have motivated association presidents.

4. Settle retention before you spend on growth. Kejriwal’s rule from the interview was blunt.

“you cannot solve for flatline retention by hacks”

Abhishek Kejriwal, in a May 2023 interview with Blume’s Sajith Pai

5. Do the revenue arithmetic early. The ad-rate math, 300 to 350 million users for $100 million to $150 million, pointed the team toward subscriptions and away from an ad-only model.

What to watch next

Three things will test the numbers. FY26 filings should show whether a ₹200 crore EBITDA run rate appears in the accounts. A confirmed funding round would settle the $500 million valuation question. And the user figures need one consistent definition.

If you are building for tier-two and tier-three users, tell us in the comments which of these moves you have tested. For more profiles, explore StartupIndiaX’s other founder stories.
