SUMMARY
- Venture debt firms Stride and Alteria led Q3 2026 deal counts, while 3one4 Capital topped equity investors with 19 deals.
- Match firms by stage, sector and cheque size: Antler writes $200K to $400K at pre-seed, AJVC about ₹1.5 Cr for 9%.
- Famous names like Peak XV and Accel aren’t the only route. Active seed and early-stage funds often fit your sector better.
Search for the top VC firms in India and you’ll find the same names in the same order. Peak XV, Accel, Z47, Blume, Elevation, Nexus. They’re real and they matter. But in Q3 2026, none of them cracked Inc42’s list of the ten most active investors.
Those are two different lists. One ranks brand and fund size. The other ranks who actually showed up with money, and that second list is the one a founder building a target list needs.

Inc42’s Q3 2026 investor leaderboard puts it plainly. Startups raised $2.2 Bn across 210 deals, and the pool of active investors shrank 24% to 511. In that tighter market, 3one4 Capital led equity investors with 19 investments, followed by Rainmatter (16), IvyCap Ventures (15) and Antler (14).
So here’s the version of the list that answers the question founders actually ask: who funds what.
The firms writing the most equity cheques
Here’s how the most active equity investors of Q3 2026 break down, using Inc42’s deal counts and firm profiles.
| Firm | Typically backs | Sector tilt | Q3 2026 deals |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3one4 Capital | Early stage | AI and SaaS, enterprise and manufacturing automation, fintech, deeptech, consumer internet | 19 |
| Rainmatter | Early stage, from Zerodha’s own capital | Climate tech, D2C, healthtech, fintech, engineering-heavy hardware | 16 |
| IvyCap Ventures | Early stage | Deeptech, enterprise tech, healthtech, consumer tech, fintech, EVs, agritech | 15 |
| Antler India | Idea to pre-seed | Varied; Q3 deals included Green Aero and Navana | 14 |
| AJVC | Early stage | Varied; Q3 deals included Dialflo and MoroMaa | 13 |
| Finvolve | Early stage | Dronetech, spacetech, clean energy, mobility, ONDC | 13 |
Deal counts reward volume. A fund writing many small cheques will outrank one writing a few large ones, which is useful if you’re early and less useful if you need a ₹10 crore lead. Read the table as “who is open for business,” then check cheque size.
A few details worth knowing. 3one4 has backed more than 110 startups since inception, including Licious, Darwinbox and Jupiter, and is gearing up for a fifth fund with a $225 Mn target. Rainmatter has built a portfolio of around 160 investments since 2016 and leans toward engineering-heavy businesses building indigenous IP. IvyCap manages more than $650 Mn and has over 65 portfolio companies.

Match your sector before you match a name
Sector fit beats fame. A firm that has already backed three companies like yours understands your market, your margins and your sales cycle.
If you’re building climate or energy, look at Rainmatter (SolarSquare was a Q3 deal), IvyCap (BatX Energies) and Finvolve (clean energy and mobility). For deeptech and space, Finvolve backed Kepler Aerospace, 3one4 backed Unbox Robotics, and Rainmatter’s portfolio includes GalaxEye. D2C and consumer founders will see Rainmatter’s portfolio with The Whole Truth Foods and Ultrahuman. AI and SaaS points toward 3one4 and Peak XV, which Inc42 says is focusing on fintech and AI with its new funds.
This is why a generic “top 20” list wastes your time. The right ten for a drone startup and the right ten for a D2C brand barely overlap.
How big a cheque, and for how much of your company
Cheque size is the number most lists skip, partly because many firms don’t publish it. Peak XV, for instance, didn’t disclose cheque size for its new funds. Two firms that do give figures are useful anchors.
Antler India typically writes initial cheques of $200K to $400K at the idea to pre-seed stage. AJVC invests about ₹1.5 Cr per startup for a 9% stake, which implies a post-money valuation of roughly ₹16.7 crore. If your ask is ₹5 crore, neither is your lead investor, but both could be a first cheque.
For context, Inc42 found the median early-stage ticket rose 20% to $1.2 Mn in Q3, even as early-stage deal volume fell. Check what a cheque costs you in equity with the Funding Round Dilution Calculator before you build your list around a number.
Where the big names fit
The famous firms are still the ones to know, they just sit differently from the activity table. Their absence from Inc42’s top ten says more about how many cheques they write than about how much they matter.
Peak XV announced $1.3 Bn across three new funds in February 2026 (India Seed, India Venture and APAC), its first independent funds since separating from Sequoia in 2023. It was also the most active VC firm in Q1 2026 with 16 deals. Accel closed its eighth India and Southeast Asia fund at $650 Mn in January 2025, aimed at early-stage startups. Z47, which was Matrix Partners India until it rebranded in July 2024, runs a seed and early-stage strategy, and reports put its latest India fund between $525 Mn and $550 Mn. Blume Ventures reached a $175 Mn first close for Fund V, targeting up to $275 Mn.
Elevation Capital, Nexus Venture Partners, Lightspeed and Kalaari also turn up on nearly every directory, usually listed across seed to Series B. Treat those stage labels as a starting point and confirm against each firm’s recent deals.
The quiet deal leaders are venture debt firms
Look at the very top of Inc42’s overall leaderboard and you won’t find an equity fund. Stride Ventures led with 38 deals and Alteria Capital followed with 31, and the two have held those spots all year. InnoVen Capital also made the top ten with 14.
That doesn’t make them competitors to equity VCs. Venture debt firms lend instead of buying shares, and InnoVen, for one, typically backs startups that have already raised equity and want to stretch runway. Deal count also isn’t the same as capital deployed. Still, if you’ve raised a round and want to extend it without selling more of the company, this group deserves a spot on your list.
Our take: build a map, not a ranking
Rankings tempt you to start at the top. Founders get further starting where their own stage and sector intersect with an active investor.

Our read is simple. With 511 active investors and fewer deals, a pitch to the wrong firm costs you a first impression you’ll want back later. Start with the active seed and early-stage funds that match your sector, use the big brands where your stage genuinely fits, and add venture debt once there’s equity in place.

Before you copy a list
- Pick investors by stage and sector first, and by brand name last.
- Use disclosed cheque sizes like Antler’s and AJVC’s as anchors, then check recent deals for everyone else.
- Treat venture debt as a runway tool for after your equity round, not a substitute for it.

FAQs
What are the top VC firms in India in 2026?
It depends on whether you rank by fame or activity. By fund size, Peak XV and Accel lead. By Q3 2026 equity deal count, 3one4 Capital, Rainmatter, IvyCap Ventures and Antler topped Inc42’s list.
Which VC firms invest at the pre-seed stage in India?
Antler India backs founders from idea to pre-seed with initial cheques of $200K to $400K, and AJVC invests about ₹1.5 Cr per startup for roughly 9%. Both appeared among Inc42’s most active investors in Q3 2026.
Is Z47 the same as Matrix Partners India?
Yes. Matrix Partners India rebranded as Z47 in July 2024 as part of a wider Matrix renaming. The firm says its existing funds and early-stage, founder-focused strategy didn’t change.
How much equity do Indian VCs usually take at early stage?
There’s no fixed number, and it varies by round and valuation. One disclosed example is AJVC, which invests about ₹1.5 Cr per startup for a 9% stake. Model your own round before you pitch.
Are venture debt firms the same as VC firms?
Not quite. Venture debt firms like Stride Ventures and Alteria Capital lend to startups instead of buying equity, though they topped Q3 2026 deal counts. They suit startups that already raised equity and want more runway.
